In separate news from earlier this week, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians announced that work on a $250 million expansion project at its Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in North Carolina is fast approaching completion. The casino resort will be built on 16.57 acres of land owned by the Catawba Indian Nation in Kings Mountain.

The tribe’s project was given the green light by the US Department of the Interior in March 2020. Work on the resort was expected to kick off much earlier, but the coronavirus pandemic caused construction and other delays. The Catawba Indian Nation and its project consultant – Delaware North – have not provided a construction timetable for the entire complex yet. The completion of that bigger casino will mark the first phase of a planned $273 million multi-purpose complex that will operate as Two Kings Casino Resort. The larger gambling venue will feature 1,300 slot machines, table games, a restaurant, and a bar. The property will be built on a portion of land near the existing facility that workers already finished clearing earlier this year. The tribe said that work on its larger casino is set to begin by the end of the year. Construction on Larger Casino to Kick Off by Year’s End Gaming facility operators must be granted approval from North Carolina authorities in order to be able to offer such gambling products. Under state law, Class III gaming options include slot machines and table games such as blackjack. News about the opening of the facility emerge five months after the Catawba Indian Nation was given the green light by North Carolina lawmakers to proceed with a previously announced plan to build a Las Vegas-style casino in Kings Mountain and offer Class III gaming at the property. Open 24/7, the facility will also include a snack bar and a service bar. It will feature 500 slot machines supplied by seven different manufacturers. The new casino is located just off Interstate 85’s Exit 5 in Kings Mountain, about 35 miles west of the City of Charlotte.

The new gaming facility is scheduled to open doors for players at noon on Thursday, July 1 after a 9:30 ribbon-cutting ceremony, leaders of the South Carolina-based tribe said. The Catawba Indian Nation this Thursday is set to unveil a pre-launch gaming facility that will be part of its planned larger Two Kings Casino Resort, news emerged earlier this week.
